You’ve probably heard on one of your tours of RenPark that it used to be an airport. Tales have even been spun about famous people who may have landed where our neighborhood now sits. I don’t know about any of the tall tales but I was able to verify the following via Google Earth:
“Built in 1929 by Curtiss Wright Flying Service, which went bankrupt & the field was acquired by the city in 1933. It rapidly outgrew itself & was sold to private enterprise in 1940, when Raleigh-Durham was opened. The Army took the base during WW-II to train fighter pilots, then returned it to the previous owners. It was closed in 1972 & sold to a developer to build a mall, which never happened.”
Tuesday Wakefield revealed the winners of a contest to design a half-acre village green in the 1,050-home neighborhood. Three teams of two graduate students from NC State’s landscaping design program presented their designs to a panel of judges last week.
Did you see the plans and what are your thoughts about the winning design?
Renaissance Park, Wakefield Development Company’s first technology-driven master-planned community near Downtown Raleigh, was honored with a Gold Award for Best Digital Marketing Tool as part of the 2008 The Nationals awards program.
“The Vision DVD does a phenomenal job of capturing the essence of Renaissance Park and has been a very successful marketing tool for the community,” said John Myers, president of Wakefield Development Company. “We are thrilled to be recognized for our efforts.”
It was only a light dusting and most of it happened after dark but we were able to go out and grab a few snapshots of the snow before it disappeared. If you have images you would like to share email us at photos@renparkonline.com.
“We are excited to have reached this milestone of the 100th home sold in such a short period of time,” said Dawn Forrest, Director of Marketing, Wakefield Development Company. “Renaissance Park’s proximity to downtown and its hi-tech features combined with Georgian and Federal architecture are what we believe to be driving the success of this community.”
