UPDATE: The meeting is December 14, 2009 not December 7th as previously posted.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and is looking forward to a great Holiday Season in Renaissance Park! The next SWCAC Meeting is Monday December 14, 2009 at 7PM at the Carolina Pines Community Center. Our neighborhood had a GREAT showing at the last meeting and this one is equally important. In addition to the police report, the parks report and a special presentation from the Healing Place there will be a strategy session on the following topics:

  1. Convincing NCDOT to fund widening the railroad bridge on Tryon Road.
  2. Pushing the City of Raleigh to put sidewalks on South Saunders and South Wilmington Streets.
  3. Asking the City of Raleigh to put a sidewalk on at least one side of Maywood Avenue between South Saunders Street and Lake Wheeler Road now.
  4. Getting the City of Raleigh to re-fund the section of Tryon Road from Lake Wheeler Road to South Wilmington Street. Previously those funds were diverted to complete the widening of Tryon Road between Dillard Drive and Cary. Now it is time for the money to be returned to our portion of Tryon Road.
  5. Persuading WCPSS to consider building a school between the Peach Road area and Renaissance Park.

The results of the strategy session will be presented to the City Council at the January budget hearing. Several of these items would be beneficial to the development of the retail areas in and around Renaissance Park. It is vital that we have another good showing at this meeting and make sure that the issues that impact us the most are represented well before the council.

The SWCAC Chair has asked that we all bring new socks and/or underwear for either men or women to this meeting. This will be holiday gifts for the men and women of the Healing Place (our guest speaker). The Healing Place of Wake County (www.hpowc.org) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) recovery and rehabilitation facility for homeless people with alcohol and drug dependency. Located near the Farmer’s Market and Dix Campus the Healing Place is located in our CAC and has been a great resource for people in need. If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like to share some holiday spirit with them just let me know and I’d be more than happy to take your gift to the meeting.

Look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting!

What would you like to see?  We’d like to hear your feedback on what would be most beneficial to you and what kind of retailers you would like to see in the area.  We’ve already established what we don’t want as a community – if we could pick from here on out what would you pick?  We want your suggestions but – don’t just say coffee shop – give us some ideas of local or national vendors that you would approach and why.

We would like to let everyone know that on Monday, November 9th at 7PM the Southwest Citizens Advisory Council will be hosting the Renaissance Park Developer Amelia Park, LLC to discuss their plan and hear our ideas on the adjacent retail area to our neighborhood.  It is important that everyone who can come please be in attendance.  The meeting is held at Carolina Pines Community Center (2305 Lake Wheeler Road).

Here is the information from the SWCAC agenda:

Commercial Activity at the corner of South Wilmington Street and Tryon Road the plan for Renaissance Park includes three blocks of retail with this corner corner block being developed first. At this time Amelia Park LLC the parent of Renaissance Park, is planning to fill that first block with GOLDEN CORRAL and Strayer University. Representatives from Amelia Park LLC and Golden Corral will join us to discuss their plan and to hear our ideas. This will be the time to express your opinions about what type of businesses you will be willing to support in that area.

It is important that we have a good showing at the meeting so please come if at all possible.  If you have an opinion on what retail you would like to see within walking distance of our community this is your place to express that opinion.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting and encourage you to get there as early as possible.
