Ed, Jenny, and Graham Rogers were the first residents of Renaissance Park, moving in on July 13, 2007. They moved from Boylan Heights, just west of downtown. They wanted to stay near downtown, enjoy the benefits of new construction, and be close to Ed’s work at NC State. He is an Associate Director in the Communication Technologies Office. Jenny works for Elexio, a church management software and website company. Graham is in 4th grade at GRACE Christian School.
Earliest memory of Ren Park:
Jenny: Driving from Lake Wheeler to the Target in Garner and over time seeing the land cleared. Then seeing this lone building (the Welcome Center) and wondering what it was and what was happening.
Ed: Walking in the mud to meet a sales rep in an RV. They were just getting ready to pave the parking lot and initial construction had started on the pool. The rep had sketchy prints for the entire development and a list of builders. The only house plans ready for selection were with First American (now Mungo Homes).
Favorite thing about being the first ones to move in:
Graham: The Pool! For about a month we had the pool to ourselves with two bored lifeguards. Later others moved in, and people with contracts to purchase, yet waiting to move in, were allowed to enjoy the pool, too.
Ed: Waving daily to the security guard who patrolled the property each night. The night we moved in, the security guard thought we were trespassing. Also Graham and I enjoyed looking for airport artifacts from the old Raleigh Municipal Airport which used to occupy this site.
Jenny: Welcoming new neighbors and watching the incredible change in the landscape
Favorite nearby restaurants:
Ed: Larry’s Southern Kitchen—all you can eat including pig’s feet and collards. It’s located on Tryon Rd., after you cross Wilmington St.
Jenny & Graham: El Toro (The Bull) is located at the corner of Junction and Tryon Rd., across from RenPark. Fav menu items include tacos and gorditas with Tinga (shredded spicy white meat chicken) with the condiment/salsa bar.
Favorite things about Ren Park now:
Graham: The pool, of course, and the sidewalks for riding bikes and scooters plus fun activities like the 4th of July kids’ parade and the Christmas party for Lil’ Troops.
Favorite thing about RenPark in the future:
Ed: Retail on a realigned Tryon Rd.
