Southwest CAC Meeting – December 14, 2009

by Anthony McLeod

UPDATE: The meeting is December 14, 2009 not December 7th as previously posted.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and is looking forward to a great Holiday Season in Renaissance Park! The next SWCAC Meeting is Monday December 14, 2009 at 7PM at the Carolina Pines Community Center. Our neighborhood had a GREAT showing at the last meeting and this one is equally important. In addition to the police report, the parks report and a special presentation from the Healing Place there will be a strategy session on the following topics:

  1. Convincing NCDOT to fund widening the railroad bridge on Tryon Road.
  2. Pushing the City of Raleigh to put sidewalks on South Saunders and South Wilmington Streets.
  3. Asking the City of Raleigh to put a sidewalk on at least one side of Maywood Avenue between South Saunders Street and Lake Wheeler Road now.
  4. Getting the City of Raleigh to re-fund the section of Tryon Road from Lake Wheeler Road to South Wilmington Street. Previously those funds were diverted to complete the widening of Tryon Road between Dillard Drive and Cary. Now it is time for the money to be returned to our portion of Tryon Road.
  5. Persuading WCPSS to consider building a school between the Peach Road area and Renaissance Park.

The results of the strategy session will be presented to the City Council at the January budget hearing. Several of these items would be beneficial to the development of the retail areas in and around Renaissance Park. It is vital that we have another good showing at this meeting and make sure that the issues that impact us the most are represented well before the council.

The SWCAC Chair has asked that we all bring new socks and/or underwear for either men or women to this meeting. This will be holiday gifts for the men and women of the Healing Place (our guest speaker). The Healing Place of Wake County (www.hpowc.org) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) recovery and rehabilitation facility for homeless people with alcohol and drug dependency. Located near the Farmer’s Market and Dix Campus the Healing Place is located in our CAC and has been a great resource for people in need. If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like to share some holiday spirit with them just let me know and I’d be more than happy to take your gift to the meeting.

Look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting!

Sgt. Slaughter Says:

Just noticed that they posted a new Priority project list a few weeks ago. Shows the Tryon Rd. extension as a Rank of 26. Below is a link to the document for you to see.

Will there be an update from the meeting posted here and what all was said/decided?

Anthony Says:

Sgt. Slaughter – yes – there will be. Not a lot to report on but when the SWCAC minutes come out I’ll take a look at them add anything that I saw different and post them for everyone to see. I think we have 2 maybe 3 recommendations going to the budget hearing on January 5th. As soon as I see something from the SWCAC Chair I will share it.
